How it started
The story behind RI Sports Equity Alliance
The RI Sports Equity Alliance is rooted in personal experience over a lifetime, but was started recently as an outgrowth of a graduate course project. The class centered on the sociology of sports and explored the role of sports in society, including issues and controversies. Equity was a centerpiece and delving deeper into this topic illuminated the need for more work to be focused on this around the state. Everyone should have the right and privilege to engage with sports in an equitable way, including as a player, coach, administrator, spectator, etc.

The Sociology of Sports
This field focuses on investigating how culture, social interactions, and social structures intersect in the social world of sports. Plainly, sports sociology intends to understand how sports help us process our lives and see the lives of others in society. This involves considering concepts and ideologies connected to race, religion, class, gender, ability, age, politics, the economy, the media, and more.
